How checking followers and unfollowers works
X gives you a follower count and a follower list. It does not tell you when somebody leaves, and it does not keep a history, so the number drops and you have no idea whose it was.
Every tracker works the same way to fill that gap: it takes a snapshot of your follower list, compares it against the previous snapshot, and reports the difference. Anyone present yesterday and missing today is logged as an unfollow, with the date.
That date is the whole value. A falling number tells you nothing you can act on; a date lines up against what you posted.
What tracking can and cannot tell you
It is worth being precise about this, because most tools imply more than they deliver.

Reading the numbers without overreacting
Every account loses followers continuously. Somewhere between 0.5 and 2 per cent a month is ordinary churn — people leaving the platform, cleaning their feed, changing interests. None of it is personal.
What deserves attention is a spike well outside your normal range. Line that date up against your posting history and the cause is usually obvious within a minute.
Sometimes the honest answer is that you posted something divisive and would post it again. The data exists to make the trade visible, not to push you toward writing nothing anybody could object to.
Ghost followers and why the count misleads
A ghost follower follows you but has not posted, liked or logged in for months. They inflate the count and deflate everything the count is supposed to represent, because engagement rate is measured against followers.
Two accounts with 10,000 followers can perform completely differently if one list is real and the other is a third dormant. Checking what proportion of your followers are actually active is usually more informative than the total, and the figure is generally higher than people expect.

Why gross numbers beat net numbers
Net follower count hides the thing a tracker is best at showing. Two accounts can both be up 100 followers this week and be in completely different situations.
One gained 115 and lost 15: healthy, attracting the right people and keeping them. The other gained 480 and lost 380: in trouble, pulling in people who leave within days, which usually means the targeting is wrong or the content does not match what the profile promised.
The headline number is identical. Only splitting gains from losses shows which account needs to change something.
What tracking does not fix
A tracker is a measurement instrument; it does not grow anything. If your account is not growing, it will show you precisely how it is not growing, which is useful and slightly demoralising.
